5 Chelsea loanees to make an impact this season

Chelsea’s transfer ban has put a spanner in the works at Stamford bridge. After years of splashing the cash on players in the transfer window, Frank Lampards side are now resigned to watch on the sidelines as the other big teams around them spend the big bucks to improve their teams.

however, there is a saving grace for the blues. With a hefty quantity of players in the infamous loan army, they can pluck players out of the depths and bring them back into the fold with the first team. luckily for Lampard, there are already a lot of first team quality players who have spent last season out on loan and are now able to come back into the side and make a positive impact straight away.

Toady we are going to look at 5 of those players and how they could help assist Chelsea in the upcoming 2019/20 season.

Now before I start, I’d like to point out the obvious. I know it is looking horrid at Chelsea football club at the moment. Sarri leaving after making considerable strides with improving the team last year, our best player in Eden Hazard leaving for Real Madrid and also the transfer ban, which will stop us from making transfers for the next two windows ( kovacic excluded).

We need Frank Lampard, a man of limited coaching experience, to come in and steady the ship this season. Champions league football will be a boost for the team but, as fans, we can’t expect the blues to conquer all of Europe next year. A top four finish would be fantastic, but top 6 is looking more likely. So with this being said, I’m now going to go through 5 players who can come in and improve the team and help enable them to get a top 6 position.

Reece James

Starting off with a bang with this one. Last seasons Wigan player of the year could come in and make a huge impact down our right wing next season. Now I’m sure, along with every other Chelsea fan, I love Azpilicueta. But, he’s not as much of an attacking force as we would want him to be. Since coming in his best position was on the right side of a back 3 when playing under Conte. But now, looking like Lampard will come in and play a back 4, we need someone to come in and be more of an attacking threat. James picked up 3 goals and 3 assists in the championship last season in a poor Wigan side, and even made it into the championship team of the year, aged just 19.

James’ key atributes are his strength, dribbling and crossing ability. Which will make him a great compliment to pulisic playing down the right wing and also his crossing ability which will benefit the strikers, as they are all big target men.

James managed to create 12 big chances last season and successfully made 76% of his dribbles. Defensively he’s also very strong. He makes 1.2 tackles per game and also makes 2.3 clearances, which shows his defensive awareness. Due to his speed and strength I feel he’ll be able to match up well with most wingers in the premier league and will most likely come into the team a few months into the season after he’s fully recovered from his ankle injury.

Christian Pulisic

Moving on to our 60million pound man, Pulisic spent the back half of last season on loan to Dortmund, the team we bought him from. Now coming in to chelsea, expectations are very high. Not only was his price tad a debating point but also with the departure of Eden Hazard it looks like he’ll have to carry the burden of being the Belgians successor as our key attacking player. Pulisic has never been known as a goal scorer. This is backed up by his 13 goals in 90 games across all competitions for Dortmund in his career. However he is only 20 years of age and has plenty of room for improvement. And with Lampard and Jody Morris mentoring him, I feel he could become one of the worlds best. Where he currently lacks in goal scoring, he makes up for in some of his underlying stats. He assisted goals 4 times last season in 20 games ( of which only 9 of those were starts). And he also completed 2.1 successful dribbles per game and was fouled 1.3 times which shows how much of a handful he is when he has the ball at his feet. Pairing his fantastic dribbling with his lighting fast pace, that equals a nightmare for defenders. I expect Pulisic to come in and make an instant impact at the bridge and I’m making the prediction that he will contribute to 15+ goals next season in the premier league.

Kurt Zouma

Almost seen as the forgotten man at Chelsea, I feel Zouma is a colossus at the back which would make a huge impact in the back 4 lineup. The 6ft4 24 year old is an improvement on all of our defenders at the club currently. He is a monster in the air and successfully makes 4.8 duels per game. He also wins 67% of his tackles which is higher that in looks. He is incredibly assured at the back and isn’t as prone to a mistake as the likes of Rudiger or Luiz. The key is to play him because apparently he is keen on going back to the club he played at last season, Everton. The reported fee is 30 million but considering that Everton payed a similar amount for Michale Keane a few years ago for a similar amount, then I think it would be a poor decision to accept. I feel that the only way to keep him would be to play him. I fee pairing him up with Andreas Christensen at the back would make for a solid CB pairing that could be maintained at Chelsea for the next 8 years. It would be a combination of Pace, strength and assured tacking that we haven’t really seen at the bridge since Terry and Carvalho. Ok maybe I’m getting a little ahead of myself.. but with a squad consisting of Zouma, Luiz, Rudiger & Christensen, we have a lot of options if players were to get injured.

Michy Batshuayi

The bats man needs to come back into the fold at Chelsea next season. He’s spent the last two seasons being thrown around from club to club and pretty much everywhere he goes, he has shined (Seville excluded). With a good combination of ball control and finishing ability he makes for a lethal in the box finisher. Although he only managed 11 games last year for loanee side Crystal Palace, he managed to score 5 goals. Which averaged out a goal every 150 minutes which better than the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Roberto Firmino. Since being out on loan he actually spent his most prolific spell linking up with Christian Pulisic at Borussia Dortmund, where he scored 7 goals in 10 games. His size and strength allows for him to hold up play and play balls through to the fast wingers in Pulisic and CHO. He also has good spacial awareness and is good at peeling off into space in the box and looking to get on the end of cut backs.

Although he has spent a large majority of his Chelsea career struggling to find minutes I feel he will have the change this season under Lampard. This is because Tammy Abraham may not be quite ready to take on a full premier league work load as his only real premier league experience was struggling with Swansea. And as for Giroud, he is a class target man, but won’t have the legs to play game in game out, especially considering Chelsea will be playing champions league football this year. Time for another prediction. If Michy stays at Chelsea this year, he will bag 10+ premier league goals next season.

Mason Mount

Last but certainly not least we move on to the young England star, Mason Mount. The attacking midfielder spent all of last season out on loan with Frank Lampard at Derby. At only 20 years of age, Mount started 35 games in the championship last season. Which shows how keen Lampard is of the youngster. And with the injury to RLC to start the season, it may look like there is a place in the Chelsea starting XI for him as the current team is lacking creativity. In the style of a Christian Eriksen, Mount is a midfielder who likes to play balls between the lines and is also a goal threat as well as a creator. He bagged 8 goals and 4 assists last season. And next year, surrounded by higher quality players, I expect those numbers to improve. He still has his lapses in concentration, but that is common with youngsters and he can certainly improve on those aspects of his game. He will have to fight the likes of Barkley and Kovacic to get into the team to start the year but I expect him to have a rotation role once RLC comes back from his injury. Bags of potential and a lot of set piece quality I can see Lampard keeping him around for the upcoming season and he is one of the most exciting players to watch in the squad.

So there is my list for the 5 Chelsea players I fee can come back from loan and make an impact with Chelsea next season. Now it’s over to you. Message me on Twitter who you think should have made the top 5 and who you think I was wrong to include. Also comment what you would like me to discuss next.
